Companies should not use dark patterns to nudge and deceive users into consenting to data collection — and regulators should recognise dark patterns as a violation of GDPR and fine violators, the messages argued, anticipating later EU platform rules [2]
Even under GDPR, data practices can discriminate against minorities such as LGBTQ+ people and victims of violence; representatives of those communities should join the policy-making process [2]
They also called for legislation to remove personal information spread without consent and punish perpetrators, and for coordinated parent-school-government action on bullying [2]

3. Access and Inclusion — Community Networks as the Decentralised Fix

In the year lockdowns turned connectivity gaps into life gaps, the cohort urged local governments, technologists and civil society to leverage community networks as a decentralised solution for rural and remote access [2]
They called for public-private internet booths and telecentres, and for evidence-based policy grounded in joint government-academia research into population needs [2]

On blockchain the cohort was notably sober: don't use it for every process, but focus on the pool of use-cases where transparency, immutability and accountability add the most value — citing online voting, identity verification and public procurement [2]
The transition to a green internet should be transparent, accountable and based on scientific research, they argued, calling for a standing dialogue between tech and energy companies and EU institutions [2]
